Shade on demand
A retractable awning is a fabric shade that rolls out from your house wall. Open it for shade. Close it when you want full sun or when a storm rolls in.
That control is the whole point. Morning sun on the patio is nice. Midday sun is not. You open the awning when the heat builds and close it when the day cools.
Awnings also shade the windows and doors behind them. Less sun on the glass means less heat inside. Your AC gets a break on hot afternoons.
When closed, the awning nearly disappears. A slim case hugs the wall. Your home keeps its clean look.
Manual or motorized
Manual awnings open with a hand crank. They cost less and have fewer parts to break. For small patios, a crank works fine.
Motorized awnings open with a remote or a wall switch. One touch and the shade rolls out. Most owners pick motorized for the ease.
Wind sensors are a smart add-on. The sensor feels strong gusts and rolls the awning in on its own. That protects the fabric during surprise storms.
Sun sensors do the reverse. They open the awning when the sun hits hard. Nice if you are away during the day and come home to a cool patio.
Fabric built for Florida
Awning fabric is not a bedsheet. It is a heavy woven acrylic made for sun and rain. It resists fading, mildew, and stains.
Colors range from solid neutrals to bold stripes. Stripes are the classic Florida look. We bring sample books so you can see the true colors in daylight.
The fabric breathes a little, so heat does not build up under it. Water beads and runs off. A quick hose rinse keeps it fresh.
Good fabric lasts many years here. Cheap fabric fades and tears fast. We only install fabric rated for Florida sun.
How it works
An awning mounts to your house wall or roof edge. We check that the wall can hold it before we promise anything.
- Free visit. We measure the wall and check what it is made of. Stucco, concrete block, and wood each need the right anchors.
- Size and fabric. You pick the width, the reach, and the fabric. We show how far the shade will fall at different times of day.
- Written price. One price covers the awning, the motor if you want one, and the install. No surprises.
- Install. Most awnings go up in half a day. We test the open and close several times with you watching.
- Care tips. We show you how to clean the fabric and when to roll it in. Five minutes of care adds years of life.
Simple care
Roll the awning in during storms. Fabric is strong, but it is not a hurricane shutter. Wind sensors help if you forget.
Let a wet awning dry before you roll it up for a long stretch. That stops mildew from growing in the folds.
Brush off leaves and rinse with the hose each season. Mild soap and water handle most spots. Skip the pressure washer — it can tear the weave.

Where awnings shine
Awnings fit best over patios, decks, and storefront windows. They also work over sliding doors to cut glare inside the house.
Renters and condo owners like awnings because they do not change the building much. Check your HOA rules first — many allow awnings with approval.
Sun when you want it
A retractable awning is for people who want sun sometimes and shade sometimes. Over a breakfast nook, you might want morning sun and afternoon shade. Over a pool deck, the family might want full sun for swimming and shade for lunch. A fixed cover cannot do both. A retractable one can.
The fabric is the heart of the system. Good awning fabric blocks UV, sheds water, and resists mildew. In our humidity, mildew resistance is not a footnote. Cheap fabric grows spots within a season. Quality fabric, cleaned once or twice a year, looks good for many years.
Wind is the enemy of an extended awning. Every retractable awning has a wind limit, and Fort Lauderdale gets gusty most afternoons. A wind sensor that retracts the awning automatically is the best money in the whole project. It protects your investment when a storm pops up while you are at work.
Retract it when you are not using it. That one habit doubles the life of the fabric and the mechanism. An awning left open through every storm and every sunny week wears out years faster than one that opens for use and closes after.
