Think in layers
Good patio lighting has layers. Bright light where you cook and eat. Soft light where you relax. A little glow to mark the edges. One harsh floodlight is not a plan.
Overhead: fans with lights
A ceiling fan with a light kit does two jobs. It moves air and lights the table. Most covered patios start here.
Pick a fan rated for damp or wet locations. Indoor fans rust fast in Florida humidity. Outdoor-rated fans last for years.
Recessed lights: the clean look
Recessed lights sit flush in a solid roof. They wash the patio in even light with no visible fixtures. Modern and tidy.
Space them evenly and keep them dimmable. Full bright for parties, low glow for quiet nights. A dimmer is a small cost with a big payoff.
String lights: the warm glow
String lights are the fastest way to make a patio feel magical. Drape them beam to beam under a pergola or along a cover edge.
Warm white beats cool white outside. Cool bulbs feel harsh. Warm bulbs flatter faces and food alike.
Post and step lights: safety
Light the edges. Post cap lights mark the structure. Step lights mark level changes. Guests move safely without bright floods.
Solar path lights work for walkways. They need no wiring. Place them where they get day sun so they charge fully.
Controls that make it easy
Put lights on timers or smart switches. Sunset-on, midnight-off, no thinking required. Phone control is nice when you are already on the couch.
Separate the zones. Cooking light, dining light, and accent light on different switches. You set the mood per zone.
Plan wiring early
Run wiring during the cover build, not after. Wires hide inside beams and panels. Adding them later means surface conduit and extra cost.
